Welcome to the Old Malvernian Sailing Club

The Old Malvernian Sailing Club (OMSC) was officially founded in 1992 by Herbert Thorn (4.40-44), positioning Malvern College as one of the pioneering schools in the inaugural Arrow Trophy regatta. This prestigious annual event takes place in Cowes every October. As one of the founding eight members, Malvern has proudly participated every year since 1992. The regatta has grown to include around 28 schools, and Malvern has consistently achieved high results, narrowly missing the overall fleet victory in 2023 due to a technical rule dispute with Radley.

Club highlights

  • Arrow Trophy Regatta: Held in Cowes each October, this event is a highlight of our calendar. Our participation dates back to the club’s inception, and it remains a cornerstone of our competitive spirit and camaraderie.
  • Belvedere Cup: Every April, OMSC members compete in the Belvedere Cup at Queen Mary Reservoir in Staines. This smaller regatta features four crew members racing J80s against other independent school sports societies, organized by the Royal Thames Yacht Club.
  • Cowes Regatta Round the Island Race: Known as the largest regatta in the world, this event is a highlight for many OMSC members. Utilizing members’ own yachts, crewed by Old Malvernians, the OMSC burgee proudly flies during this exciting race. It also serves as a great opportunity to gather potential crew members for the Arrow Trophy.
  • The OMSC regularly competes against Oundle, Harrow, Sherborne, Wellington, Radley, Winchester, Cheltenham, Ardingly, Tonbridge, Uppingham, Pangbourne, Charterhouse, Dulwich, Marlborough, Shrewsbury, Kings Canterbury, Bryanston, Stowe, and Rugby.

Join Us

The OMSC is dedicated to fostering a strong connection among alumni through the thrilling sport of sailing. We are always happy to advise Old Malvernians on suitable sailing courses, yacht charters, crew placements, and networking opportunities. Yachting often becomes a preferred sport when dinghy racing is no longer feasible, offering a chance to reconnect with the school and rekindle the camaraderie of team sports, regardless of the weather conditions.

Get Involved

New members are always welcome. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or just getting started, the OMSC provides a supportive and enthusiastic community for all alumni. For more information or to join us at our next event, please contact: Robert Hammond (2.96-01)| [email protected].
