Eight Old Malvernians enjoyed a wonderful day at the Hardwick House real tennis court on Saturday 10th October, with 11 sitting down to a three-course lunch in the dedans overlooking the court, widely regarded as one of the finest in the country.
As well as catching up with old friends and enjoying some competitive tennis, the day was a chance to reminisce and, in particular, to remember and toast Ron Hughes, who was so influential to so many, both on and off the court.
Play began with the current Over-75s World Champions, Nigel Draffan (1.64–69) and Philip Shaw-Hamilton (3.65–70), teaching host Simon Constantine and Jonathan Fisher a lesson in perseverance, coming back from 0–6, 0–4 to win in three sets. Mike Henman and Simon Shenkman then put on a fabulous exhibition of singles, sharing the spoils at a set apiece.
After lunch, and two withdrawals due to illness and injury, Nigel and Philip split their pairing to team up with John Burnett and Jim Foxall for an entertaining doubles match. The day concluded long after most had retired, with Philip and Simon playing four sets of singles!
Thanks go to John Lees, who kindly donated an OM jacket, made to measure for him a few years ago, which fitted Simon tolerably well as the current host of the reunion.
Join us next year
Simon would be delighted to hear from any other OMs who would like to join this merry band. Next year’s reunion is provisionally set for Saturday 9th October 2027, once again at Hardwick House. If you would like to take part, please get in touch with the Malvernian Society at [email protected], and we will put you in touch with Simon.
