Malvern College alum, Sam Glover (5.90-92), has completed a remarkable solo row across the Atlantic Ocean, emerging as the fastest solo competitor in The World’s Toughest Row with an extraordinary race time of 42 days, 3 hours, and 15 minutes.
Covering an arduous 3000 nautical miles, Sam, aboard The Entrepreneur Ship, reached the historic Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua on Wednesday, 24th January, 2024. His journey, which commenced from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on 13th December, showcased not only physical endurance but also an impressive strategic approach. Surpassing the record set by former covert operations leader ‘The Real James Bond,’ Mike Bates, Sam’s focus on speed rather than sheer mileage proved to be a winning strategy.
Sam’s expedition exemplifies the indomitable human spirit and unwavering determination. Amidst a myriad of challenges and triumphs, from overcoming the fear of diving into the water to scrape barnacles off the boat’s hull, to the exhilaration of witnessing a moonrise near the equator, each day brought a unique set of obstacles and joys. Even when faced with a setback involving his boat’s battery, Sam’s adaptability and problem-solving skills came to the fore as he implemented power-saving measures – a true embodiment of the Malvern Qualities.
Despite the numerous hardships, Sam’s dedication and perseverance not only secured his lead in the solo category but also positioned him ahead of larger teams, highlighting the remarkable strength of a solo rower’s spirit.
Sam’s narrative stands as an inspiration for those who dare to dream and possess the courage to pursue those dreams, irrespective of the challenges that may arise. Motivated by a desire to make a difference, Sam encourages those inspired by his journey to consider supporting his chosen charity, UnLtd, through donations. UnLtd is the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs. It funds and supports social entrepreneurs – enterprising people with solutions that change our society for the better. You can donate here.
