Prof. Thomas Lanyon-Hogg

Tom Lanyon-Hogg is an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, where he leads a biomedical research group tackling one of the most urgent global health challenges: antibiotic resistance. Recently awarded a major Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust, his team’s research has gained national attention, showcasing innovative molecules to combat antibiotic resistance and new methods to accelerate drug discovery.

Driven by a desire to help others and a natural aptitude for science, Tom found his calling in biomedical research. He thrives on the complexity of the field – whether it’s solving biochemical puzzles, mentoring junior scientists, or securing funding – the daily challenges make the work deeply rewarding.

Malvern College played a formative role in his journey, providing a strong academic foundation and enriching experiences through societies including the Lucretian and Wheeler-Bennett. Awarded an academic exhibition, honorary scholarship, and assisted place, Tom feels very fortunate to have attended Malvern and credits the collaborative house spirit of No.5 with shaping his approach to collaborative teamwork, which is an essential skill in scientific research.

Tom hopes to contribute meaningfully to the fight against antibiotic resistance while also training the next generation of scientists. He urges pupils is to pursue subjects they’re passionate about, build resilience, and make the most of everything Malvern has to offer – academically, socially and personally.
