Muktar Shagaya

Malvernians are known for their drive to make a difference, and few embody that spirit more than Muktar Shagaya. After leaving Malvern in 2008, Muktar studied International Relations at the University of Plymouth before returning to Nigeria for his National Youth Service. His early career at the Infrastructure Bank ignited a passion for sustainable development, leading him to pursue a Master’s in International Development: Development Management at the University of Manchester.

Harnessing this global perspective, Muktar returned home determined to tackle one of Nigeria’s greatest challenges – energy access. He co-founded Let There Be Light (LTBL), a renewable energy enterprise providing affordable solar home systems to rural communities. His work with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency gave him invaluable on-the-ground experience, from engaging traditional rulers to reaching remote, off-grid villages. By 2020, Asolar Systems had secured national partnerships and funding to deliver 100,000 solar units across the country, lighting homes and transforming lives for families paying as little as £1.50 a month. This commitment to community empowerment and innovation paved the way for Muktar’s entry into public service, culminating in his election to Nigeria’s House of Representatives in 2023 – one of the youngest members to serve.

Now Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education Services, Muktar champions reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s education system and increase government investment in young learners. Reflecting on his formative years at Malvern, he credits the College with instilling lasting values of discipline, curiosity, and service, all qualities he continues to draw upon in public life. “If you’ve had the privilege of an education like Malvern’s,” he says, “you have an obligation to give back.” Whether on the rugby field, in the boardroom, or on the floor of Parliament, Muktar’s journey is a powerful example of how a Malvern education can inspire leadership, purpose, and progress far beyond the College walls.
