2000-Dominic_Sandbrook_rights_bought_from_Alamy.jpgMalvern College is to welcome back Dominic Sandbrook (1.88-93) to give this year’s Blumenau Lecture on Thursday 9th May.

The Blumenau Lecture takes place every year, named in honour of the College’s former head of history, Ralph Blumenau. Previous speakers have included Jonathan Dimbleby and Dr James Hawes.

After leaving Malvern College, Dominic Sandbrook went to Balliol College, Oxford, where he read History and French. After spending a year as a language assistant in Provence, Dominic studied for a Masters in history at the University of St Andrews, and then went to Jesus College, Cambridge, for his PhD, which won the Sara Norton Prize.

He is perhaps best known for his books about Britain since the 1950s and is the author of eight books of modern history, as well as the Adventures in Time children's series. His most recent book is Who Dares Wins, the fifth in a series on Britain since the Second World War and tells the story of the first Thatcher administration in the early 1980s.

Dominic is a regular writer for the Daily Mail and the Sunday Times and has written and presented many documentaries for BBC Two and BBC Radio 4. Before becoming a freelance writer, Dominic was a university history lecturer and is now a Visiting Professor at King's College London.

His popular podcast, The Rest is History (co-presented with fellow historian Tom Holland), has recently been awarded the 2023 President’s Medal by The British Academy – the national body for humanities and social sciences. The podcast was bestowed the award in recognition of its work to promote and popularise history to a global audience and is the first time a podcast has received such an award.

Since first airing in late 2020, The Rest is History has provided in-depth explorations into a diverse and complex set of historical topics ranging across time and place from antiquity and the ancient world to “the architect of Modern China”, Deng Xiaoping and the life and death of John F. Kennedy. Since its launch, the podcast has been downloaded an incredible 150 million times globally.
