OM GOLFING SOCIETY

HISTORY
The OMGS was founded in July 1922 and played its first match against the Old Carthusians later the same year. One of the founders of the OMGS, Susie Mellin, was also instrumental in the founding of the Halford Hewitt the following year.

In 2019 the OMGS won the Bernard Darwin Senior Trophy and the Halford Hewitt, and in 2022 the Bernard Darwin 55+ Trophy.

FIXTURES
Apart from annual fixtures against alumni teams from Repton, Shrewsbury, Marlborough, Rugby, Winchester, Uppingham, Sherborne, Haileybury, Cranleigh and, of course, Malvern, the OMs compete in a wide range of competitions, with some 30 regular events each year: the Arnell Bowl pits OMs against Old Reptonians throughout the summer culminating in semi-finals and finals in October. Woking GC hosts the Alba Trophy, a 36-hole invitation scratch foursomes competition for some 30 teams from Surrey and other long-standing golfing societies; and the Bernard Darwin Senior Trophy and the Bernard Darwin Trophy in June and July. Little Aston GC hosts the Public Schools' Midlands Meeting in June, the Maltonbury Cup (a triangular tournament with Repton and Shrewsbury) in August and the President's Tankard in October. The Putting Competition is hosted by the Royal Wimbledon GC. The Grafton Morrish culminates in finals at Hunstanton & Brancaster GC. There is the Spring Meeting at St George's Hill GC, the Summer Meeting at Blackwell GC, the Autumn Meeting at Royal Cinque Ports GC and the Northern Meeting in September at Formby GC.

LATEST NEWS

In 2022 OM golfers were able to enjoy a packed fixture list during the golfing year, with over 20 events arranged including matches, tournaments, meetings and a centenary black-tie dinner. In the regular list of eleven matches, our teams registered wins against Haileybury, Marlborough, Winchester and the College (twice!). The matches against Shrewsbury and Rugby were halved.

In the major tournaments, the OMGS enjoyed a strong season, with both young and old sharing the limelight. In the Halford Hewitt, we beat Canford, Taunton before falling to Charterhouse. In the Grafton Morrish, a similar OM team beat Canford (again) and KCS, Wimbledon before losing to Clifton. In the Public Schools Meeting at Little Aston and in the Edward Harris Cup at Royal Porthcawl, we ran out third. Pride of place this year must go to the OMGS team in the Bernard Darwin (55+) Competition: alongside captain Adrian Coleman (2.76-81) were Adrian Barrett Greene (SH.76-81), Guy Davis (8.72-76), Philip Manduca (SH.73-75), Robert Mason (4.77-82) and David Price (7.69-73). Having seen off Charterhouse, Repton and Rugby, they beat Uppingham (2.5-0.5) in the final, losing not a single match in the whole competition.

In celebration of the OMGS’ centenary, over 100 members enjoyed not only a superb dinner at the RAF Club in January, they also had a memorable centenary tournament at St George’s Hill with, once again, an attendance of 100.
