OM SAILING CLUB


HISTORY
The Old Malvernian Sailing Club was formed in 1990. The original brief was 'to have a dinghy race against the College team on the River Severn, followed by a dinner, to organise rallies at different parts of the coat where there there might be sufficient support, and to hold an annual dinner.' The club was to be run by a Commodore, a Vice-Commodore, a Rear-Commodore and an Hon. Secretary.

FIXTURES
The Arrow Trophy, which normally takes place over the first weekend in October, is an open sailing competition between schools that can put together a team of former pupils. It is raced as an annual weekend regatta in one-design yachts. The event is organised on the challenging waters of the Solent aboard Sunsail’s fleet of First 40 yachts with a maximum crew of twelve.The yachts are collected from Port Solent (Portsmouth) on the Friday and sailed over to Cowes Yacht Haven.

The race format is short fleet racing on Saturday, finishing up in Cowes late afternoon, followed by the Arrow Trophy Dinner at the Royal Ocean Racing Club.The top four schools from the fleet races then go into a series of America’s Cup style match races on the Sunday to determine the overall winner, whilst the remaining schools fleet race again to determine the winner of the Charterhouse Bowl.

This has developed into a highly competitive and hugely fun event that should attract both keen racing sailors and enthusiastic cruisers alike.

We also enter a team in the Belvidere Cup, in early April, which is a similar event run by the Royal Thames Yacht Club at Queen Mary’s Reservoir, Staines in their fleet of J80s. It would be very good to hear from any OM who, in particular, has racing experience for this event.

RECENT NEWS
The OMSC competed in the annual Arrow Trophy at Cowes (2-3 Oct 2021) and were placed 11th out of 14 crews. In the individual Oceanis 37 class races they finished 7th, 9th and 13th.
