An Old Malvernian has been sharing his knowledge and experience of architecture with pupils at Malvern College Qingdao in China. On 26th October, Nigel Lewis (7.64-68) visited the school to participate in a series of activities with pupils and teaching staff and share his experience of his school days at Malvern College.
As he reflected on his school days, Nigel emphasised the significance of his extracurricular activities at Malvern College. He believes these experiences not only played a crucial role in his academic achievements, but also created indelible memories. During his talk, he urged pupils to live in the present, grasping all opportunities available to them. He believes a willingness to explore and act are the key attributes pupils need to face challenges and opportunities in life.
As well as giving a talk to pupils about his career, Nigel had a tour of the campus, was interviewed for the school magazine, and met with the parent-teacher association.
Nigel has more than 30 years of experience in the planning and design field where, as part of multi-disciplinary design and construction teams, he has been responsible for the planning and realisation of both built facilities and urban infrastructure. It was during his time at Malvern College that Nigel developed a deep-rooted love for architectural design. Nigel initially trained at Arup as a designer, and has since been responsible for the planning, design, development and project management of major buildings and infrastructure projects worldwide.
Nigel has also written extensively on techniques for project structuring and financing, and sustainable approaches to future development. His new book Design and Order: perceptual experience of built form – principles in the planning and making of place, outlines the principles behind the successful planning and creation of inspired built forms and urban places.
We are extremely grateful to Nigel for giving his time to talk to pupils at Malvern College Qingdao. If you would be happy to give a talk to pupils at Malvern College, or one of our international schools, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch with us at [email protected].
