Old Malvernian Izzy Barrett (4.19-24) has recently returned from an extraordinary trip to Sri Lanka, where she joined the Friends of Della and Don (FODAD) charity in celebrating its 20th anniversary. Her journey provided a unique opportunity to witness first hand the charity’s incredible impact on the local community.
Friends of Della and Don is a UK-registered charity dedicated to supporting those in Sri Lanka whose lives were devastated by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. The charity was founded after Della and Don, who were holidaying in Sri Lanka at the time of the disaster, survived thanks to the warning of a local fisherman. Deeply moved by the tragedy that unfolded around them, they committed themselves to helping the hardest-hit communities in Ratmalana and the surrounding areas.
Over the past two decades, FODAD has worked tirelessly to provide education, vocational skills, access to healthcare, community support, and sustainable employment opportunities to those in need. Izzy’s recent trip allowed her to meet individuals whose lives have been transformed by the charity’s initiatives.
Reflecting on her experience, Izzy shared:
“I’ve had a long-standing connection with the charity, having first visited with my family a decade ago. When they invited me to interview members of the community and write an article to celebrate their 20-year milestone, I was honoured. It was incredible to hear the stories of those they’ve helped and to see the tangible progress that has been made.”
Izzy also highlighted the role of her former boarding house, No.4, which in 2023 raised funds for FODAD through an Easter egg sale. Her trip enabled her to see the impact of such fundraising activities.
“It was truly rewarding to witness the difference that our support has made,” Izzy added. “I look forward to returning in the future and continuing to be part of the charity’s journey.”
