Job title: Managing Consultant, ERM: Environmental Resources Management

What does your job role involve?

I’m an environmental consultant at ERM focusing on submarine cable permitting. Many of the submarine cables are owned by companies like Meta or Google and it’s my job to write an environmental impact assessment and work with local partners and or the authorities from the specific countries to understand their permitting requirements to install submarine cables. I’m currently working on a massive subsea cable project that will interconnect Europe, Asia and Africa. The main trunk of the subsea cable will go round all of Africa, with the different branches landing into countries like Egypt and Seychelles, so there’s lots of permitting to get in place. Our work helps to deliver internet capacity and reliability, and supports the sustainability development in these countries, as it enhances livelihoods and facilitates connectivity and accessibility for businesses in what are often, less well-developed countries.

Where does your interest in sustainability come from?

I believe sustainability is the most prevalent topic for our generation and I studied Biology and Sustainable Development at university because of this. We need to leave the world in a better state for generations to come rather than how it currently is. This is a mantra I’ve been living by for a long time. I am originally from Hong Kong and so my cultural experiences in both APAC and EMEA have allowed me to see first-hand the stark contrast between the regions. Each country has a different approach to sustainability and the UK certainly has the means to lead the way in sustainable growth.

Why do you think Malvern College’s Green giving Day is so important?

Malvern is a fantastic school and pupils should not only be a role model when they leave but be the ones pioneering for change. Many OMs will already have access to platforms and influence circles to elevate this awareness. And it is our individual duty to do so.

Malvern has given me a lot of opportunities and I loved my time at the College. It’s enabled me to get where I am so supporting this Green Giving Day is just instinctive for me.
