Science Centre

Our most recent capital project was completed at the end of 2014 and opened on 26th January 2015 as part of our 150th anniversary celebrations. Half the total cost of the project was raised through the kind and generous support of Old Malvernians, parents and Friends of the College which is a fantastic achievement.

Science has played an important and defining role in the history of Malvern College. Radar technology was established and developed at the College during the 1940s. In 1943, the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) was relocated to Malvern, and this later became the Royal Radar Establishment (RRE). Subsequently, QinetiQ was established on College grounds to the East of the main College campus.

In the 1960s, Nuffield Science was pioneered under the late John Lewis, former Head of Science and Housemaster of No.8, revolutionising the way Science is taught in schools around the world today, i.e. through the introduction of practical Science experiments. In the 1970s, Malvern College also developed the Science in Society programme – a further teaching approach that is still practised worldwide. In addition to these achievements in the teaching of Science, Malvern College, together with its associated prep school, The Downs Malvern, has produced three Nobel Prize winners in the field of Science.

The new Science Centre has cutting-edge facilities and will allow for this heritage to continue. The original building has been completely refurbished and a new lecture theatre has been added. The lecture theatre has been named after John Lewis.

These state-of-the-art facilities are now ensuring the College is able to;

Prepare pupils for flourishing futures in all-important STEM subjects, vital to the prosperity of the country

Help develop a passion for Science in our pupils, demonstrating how the Sciences interact and are at the heart of many problems facing the world today

Inspire our pupils to view Science as a rewarding and important career choice, in areas as diverse as green energy, food provision for an ever-growing world

population, medical challenges such as ‘superbugs’ etc.

Attract outstanding teaching talent by offering exceptional Science facilities

Let teachers apply new and innovative approaches to teaching and learning by providing the necessary Science equipment

Host more Science-related events, e.g. talks and events by university lecturers, representatives from Science companies etc. and thus develop further interest in Science, not only amongst our pupils but also potentially among the local community
