Alan Lyall (SH 1946-51)

Alan died in 2017, aged 84, after a life dedicated to the legal profession and to his great passion, outdoor pursuits. The Malvernian Society was the primary beneficiary of his will and a transformational £3.9 million legacy from his estate.

A Cambridge graduate who went on to a career as a solicitor, Alan's love was mountaineering. He climbed the Matterhorn in Switzerland in 1962 and Mount Snowdon over 500 times, retiring to Snowdonia where he wrote many books on the subject of mountaineering.

Alan had let us know several years ago that he would be leaving all or part of his estate to the Malvernian Society which gave us a welcome opportunity to thank him, and to discuss with him how his legacy might benefit our pupils to best effect.

Alan’s gift is the most significant bequest to the Malvernian Society to date, and it has the potential to be of huge benefit to pupils in the years to come. As agreed with Alan, a large proportion of his legacy went into an endowment fund to support the Malvernian Society's Assisted Places Scheme, one of our top priorities. We also made provision within the legacy for outdoor pursuits, and for the Rogers Theatre refurbishment, so the impact of Alan’s generosity was both immediate and enduring.

We are immensely grateful to Alan for his inspiring philanthropic support. If you are planning on leaving a legacy to Malvern College or the Malvernian Society, or if you would like more information about legacy giving in general, please do get in touch.
