Old Malvernian Richard Phillips (3.68-73) is set to release his debut novel, Three Down, on Thursday 28th November. The book follows the gripping journey of protagonist Jack, whose life, shaped by a series of traumatic events, leads him down a path of revenge and redemption.
Set against the backdrop of the 1960s and 80s, the story spans locations in Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham, and Worcestershire. It traces Jack’s tumultuous progression from a self-doubting child to a man seeking retribution for wrongs endured at the hands of three pivotal figures. As Jack’s business collapses, he embarks on a mission to rebuild both his career and his life, achieving success in the corporate world but not without facing further personal tragedy.
Three Down is a compelling tale of ambition, love, loss, and revenge. It offers a thought-provoking exploration of human frailty and resilience. Richard explains: “Whilst this is a work of fiction it is influenced by my tough challenges in business in the industrial Midlands, involving rescuing troubled companies and restructuring others in the face of stiff opposition from trades unions in Thatcher’s Britain. I wanted the novel to be character driven, the reader getting to know Jack deeply through flashbacks and defining moments in his life.”
Richard’s professional achievements are remarkable. At just 35, he became the youngest chairman of a listed company in the UK. Now semi-retired, he enjoys spending time with his large family and indulging in skiing, sailing, shooting, painting, and rugby union. He also plays the violin—though, as he jokes, only when no one is listening. During his time at Malvern College, Richard was Head of House and a Chapel Prefect.
