A group of Old Malvernians gathered recently at Moreton Morrell to enjoy a friendly game of Real Tennis in memory of three much-loved figures from the Malvernian community: Ron Hughes (Staff.56-86), Bernard Weatherill (6.64-69) and Keyvan Farmanfarmai (6.55-60). The occasion was marked by warm camaraderie, competitive spirit and shared memories stretching back over six decades.
While there were no official winners or losers, the play was keenly contested in a spirit of friendly competitiveness. As one participant put it, echoing the wisdom of Schulz’s Charlie Brown in Peanuts: “It doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, so long as you don’t lose!”
The group reflected fondly on the influence of Ron Hughes, who was remembered not only for his dedication to the game but also for his guidance on technique. Nigel Draffan (1.64-69) recalled Ron’s coaching advice: “Keep your rackets up and hit the ball six inches over the net, so that when it skims the net, it looks like a good shot!”
The event also provided an opportunity to catch up and reminisce. Tim Harper (3.62-66) remarked: “It was so good to meet you all again and share memories and stories. It feels like a good group of old boys in every sense.”
One such memory – though perhaps better left off the official record – involved a story from around 1964, when a pupil allegedly managed to shoot the cap off a Porter’s head at Malvern station from a moving train. Two of those present confessed to being on the train at the time, while another thought it had something to do with a Bishop. Whether fact or folklore, the tale added a note of mischief to the proceedings.
Though played in Ron, Bernard and Keyvan’s memory, the gathering was far from solemn; it was a celebration of enduring friendships, shared history and a love of a truly unique game. It was, as everyone agreed, very much in the spirit of these three remarkable men.
