OM returns to inspire future engineers

On Friday, 7th March, Malvern College welcomed back Old Malvernian Deema Mozayen (9.10-15) for an engaging careers talk with Sixth Form physicists.

Deema’s talk, held in the Lewis Lecture Theatre, took pupils on a fascinating journey through his engineering career, covering topics ranging from nuclear submarines to controlled explosions, and even a light-hearted reference to the iconic power plant in The Simpsons. Throughout his presentation, he connected these engineering concepts to his own university experiences, offering a first-hand perspective on both the challenges and rewards of the field.

One of the key themes of Deema’s talk was the critical role of nuclear energy in the future of power generation. He highlighted the staggering difference in energy density between coal and nuclear energy and debunked common misconceptions about nuclear waste and reactor safety, explaining that fears surrounding nuclear energy often stem from natural disasters or poor infrastructure rather than the technology itself. His insights sparked discussion among pupils about the long-term viability of nuclear power as a sustainable energy source.

Deema also gave useful advice to our aspiring engineers in the Sixth Form by highlighting the different branches of engineering and talking through some practical tips on how to approach and succeed in the field.

The evening was both informative and enjoyable, blending helpful insights with fun anecdotes. Deema’s passion for engineering and his willingness to share his experiences left a lasting impression on pupils, encouraging them to explore the possibilities within the industry.

The Malvernian Society extends its gratitude to Deema for his time and invaluable insights. We look forward to welcoming him back in the future.
