OM Leads Ferry Fundraiser at Worcester Cathedral

Stephen Cope (7.70–72), Ferry Master of the Worcester Cathedral Ferry, is calling on the Malvernian community to support a fundraising campaign for a new electric outboard motor – an essential upgrade to ensure the city’s ferry continues to operate in an environmentally responsible way.

The ferry, affectionately known as ‘Doris’, currently relies on an aging petrol motor to travel between its mooring and the crossing point, as well as for launch and recovery at Northwick. However, the motor has become increasingly unreliable, noisy, and costly to maintain, reducing the funds available for local charitable donations. In keeping with the ferry’s eco-friendly ethos, Stephen and the team are determined to replace it with a clean, quiet electric alternative.

Despite a shorter season due to a late Easter, the ferry enjoyed a successful year, with a long stretch of dry summer weather. Families flocked to the riverbank, with many choosing to cross the river by the ferry due to its unique charm. the cost of the crossing is just 50p and all money is donated to local charitable causes.

The cost of a suitable electric outboard motor is estimated at £3,000, and the Cathedral Ferry team is exploring all avenues to raise the necessary funds. Stephen is now appealing to Malvern alumni to help support the cause. “Our aging outboard motor is smelly, noisy and unreliable. It is also costing far too much to maintain, reducing significantly the amounts we can give away each year to local charities. It needs to be replaced but it makes no sense to buy another petrol one using, as it will, a fossil fuel. To match the environmental values that the public now expects, we must ‘go electric’. Whatever OMs might choose to donate will be gratefully received,” he says.

If you can support this brilliant initiative, donations can be made via the crowdfunding page – donate here.
