OM conquers Mont Blanc for charity

Kirsty Caldicott (4.92–95) recently undertook a remarkable and gruelling challenge in support of Hope and Homes for Children, scaling Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Western Europe.

Joined by two friends, Kirsty began the adventure with a three-day acclimatisation climb on Gran Paradiso, Italy’s highest mountain entirely within its borders. This was just the beginning of her physically and mentally demanding journey.

With adverse weather conditions approaching, the trio were forced to compress their Mont Blanc ascent and descent into just two days – an intense feat that meant sacrificing sleep and pushing their limits. The climb was not without danger: a climber fell from the Couloir, a treacherous section they had to cross twice, just before their climb, and all while they had to dodge falling rocks and navigate brutal 700-metre scrambles en route to the Gouter Hut.

After a brief rest, Kirsty’s final midnight ascent began. The summit path, just two feet wide in places, demanded unwavering focus and a fair share of luck. But Kirsty reports that the reward was immense: breathtaking views from the top of Europe and the deep satisfaction of completing a challenge that tested every ounce of endurance and determination.

Reflecting on the experience, Kirsty said, “It was all worth it at the top – and at the bottom! We definitely felt we earned our sponsorship money.”

To date, Kirsty’s climb has raised over £4000 for Hope and Homes for Children, a charity working to end the institutionalisation of children around the world. You can support her cause and read more about her journey via Kirsty’s JustGiving page.
