Old Malvernians triumph in thrilling Cricketer Cup against Old Salopians

The Old Malvernian Cricket Club (OMCC) delivered a remarkable performance at the weekend (Sunday 8th June) to secure a dramatic victory over the Old Salopians in the first round of The Beechbrook Capital Cricketer Cup, continuing their proud tradition in the competition and securing their place in Round Two.

The day also featured a vibrant social gathering, with many spectators cheering the Malvern team. The annual OMCC Patrons Lunch also took place, with over 80 guests in attendance. Highlights including a presentation by Ricky Ellcock (SH.81-82) of his book Balls to Fly, and a special appearance by former England wicketkeeper Jack Russell, who unveiled his commissioned painting of The Senior, painted last summer. As for the match, despite the absence of any of the seven professional OM cricketers currently playing county cricket, captain Josh Haynes (5.12–17) led a spirited and youthful side with determination and tactical acumen.

After losing the toss, Malvern were put into the field and faced an aggressive start from the Shrewsbury openers, with Ed Pollock racing to 10 off the first over. However, the tide began to turn thanks to disciplined bowling from Angus Catto (5.17–22) and the ever-reliable Liam Smith (5.10–15), who slowed the run rate and took key wickets. The breakthrough came when Haynes dismissed the dangerous Pollock for 56, shifting the momentum firmly in Malvern’s favour. Tight bowling and sharp fielding saw the Salopians collapse from 91-2 to 210 all out in their 50 overs.

The chase, however, began disastrously for the OMs, who found themselves reeling at 3 for 3 within the first ten minutes. A fourth wicket fell at 43, leaving the team in a precarious position. But Alex Milton (5.10–14) anchored the innings with a masterful 82, described by OMCC President Bryan Richardson as “one of the best Cricketer Cup innings I have seen in a long time.” He was ably supported by Dan Holland (SH.15–20), who contributed a steady 28.

After Holland’s dismissal, Milton was joined by Mahaaz Ahmed (2.13–18), who’s fluent 58 not out included a flurry of reverse sweeps and attacking strokes. Even after Milton’s unfortunate dismissal at 181, Ahmed guided the team home with composure, supported by Angus Catto, who added a crucial 10 runs. The OMs reached 211-6 with four overs to spare, completing a stunning comeback.

The Pavilion erupted in celebration, with particularly loud cheers from the Patrons Club marquee. The victory was a testament to the resilience and talent of the OM side and extended their unbeaten record against Shrewsbury in the Cricketer Cup.

The OMCC team now looks ahead to a Round Two clash against old rivals Tonbridge, to be played at Malvern College on Sunday 29th June. Supporters are warmly encouraged to attend what promises to be another thrilling encounter.

Special thanks go to Bryan Richardson (3.57-62), President of the OMCC and Founder of the Patrons Club for his support and help in organising the day.
