Old Malvernian Jen Mugleston (8.06-11) has achieved a lifelong ambition by swimming the English Channel in a two-person relay, raising more than £4,500 for The Alexa Trust, a charity that supports families with babies in neonatal care.
Jen and her relay partner, Mike, began their challenge at Shakespeare Beach in Dover, taking turns to swim one-hour stints across the Channel. Though the nautical distance is 21 miles, tidal conditions extended their swim to approximately 35 miles. After 14 hours and 16 minutes of continuous effort, they reached the French shore.
Reflecting on the experience, Jen said: “We were blessed with an incredible day and lucky for a break in the weather, as in the run-up it looked like we might not get the chance! It was one of the best days of my life – and we raised some money! It’s a good feeling.“
Having returned to swimming in the summer of 2024 after a long break, Jen set herself a series of personal challenges, with the Channel swim being a long-held goal. She trained rigorously for the feat and now hopes to one day attempt a solo crossing.
“Swimming the English Channel has always been a goal of mine,” she said. “Who knows, I may one day attempt a solo crossing, but for now I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to cross as part of a two-person relay.”
