Old Malvernian crowned Scottish Downhill Champion 2025

We are thrilled to share the exciting news that Emma Wood (8.14-16) has claimed victory at the 2025 Scottish Downhill Championships, held at Glencoe Mountain Resort on 28th – 29th June. This prestigious event is part of the Scottish Downhill Association (SDA) Series and is known for its challenging terrain and fierce competition.

Downhill mountain biking is a high-adrenaline sport involving individually timed runs down steep, technical tracks filled with rocks, roots, jumps, and drops. Riders are transported to the top of the course via chairlift, and the fastest single run determines the winner.

This year’s championships were made even more dramatic by adverse weather conditions. High winds forced the closure of the Glencoe chairlift on Saturday, cancelling all practice runs. Riders had just one chance to race on Sunday, heightening the pressure and excitement.

Emma, seeded second in the Elite Female category, delivered a remarkable performance. Navigating the rain-soaked and heavily rutted track with precision, she made a bold decision in the final section to overtake a fellow competitor – an audacious move that paid off. She crossed the finish line safely and was elated to discover she had secured the fastest time, earning her the title of Scottish Downhill Champion.

This victory marks Emma’s first win in the Elite category, which she qualified for this year after a strong debut season in 2024. Her triumph is all the more inspiring given her journey back from a serious shoulder injury sustained in 2023. After dislocating her shoulder during a race, she underwent surgery involving five anchors and endured a six-month recovery. Two years on, she continues to work diligently to rebuild strength and confidence.

Emma balances her racing career with a full-time job as a qualified accountant in Edinburgh and discovered mountain biking at the age of 23.

Reflecting on her journey, Emma shared: “Mountain biking has taught me so much about resilience, calculated risk-taking, and endurance. I’m proud of how I’ve come back stronger after every setback. These lessons extend far beyond the track and into everyday life.

“Thank you to Malvern College for the freedom to pursue my sporting passions and for the many opportunities in adventure sports that helped shape who I am today.”

Emma remains a passionate advocate for trying new things at any stage of life and we look forward to following her continued success on and off the bike.
