Andy Murtagh, a former English teacher, Housemaster, and professional cricketer, has unveiled his latest book, a heartfelt chronicle of his remarkable 30-year journey at Malvern College. Blending humour, insight, and affection, In Loco Parentis recounts his experiences as a Housemaster, educator and mentor. Murtagh’s reflections offer a captivating glimpse into the traditions and camaraderie that make Malvern so unique.
Andy first arrived at Malvern College intending to stay for just a couple of years. However, the College’s unique charm changed his plans. “Malvern is like that,” he reflected, “It seeps into your blood.” Over three decades, Murtagh left an indelible mark, mentoring countless pupils both as a beloved teacher and a cricket coach.
During his tenure, Murtagh served as Housemaster of two Houses—first No.7, where he spent nine rewarding years, and later No.5, where he established the College’s first new day House. This experience makes him a standout figure in the College’s history and provided rich material for his latest book.
Since retiring from teaching, Andy has embraced a successful third career as a biographer and author, with seven published titles to date and two more forthcoming. This latest book is a tribute to his time at Malvern College and an insightful window into the traditions, camaraderie, and experiences that define life at the school.
Andy, along with his wife, continues to live close to the College in Hanley Swan, keeping his connection to the Malvern community alive.
