Malvernians explore life at University of Cambridge

On Wednesday 14th May, four Lower Sixth pupils with academic interests in Mathematics, Engineering, and Natural Sciences enjoyed an inspiring visit to the University of Cambridge. They were warmly welcomed and toured by two Old Malvernians currently studying at the university – Ginny Lawrence (6.16-21, Pembroke College) and Emilio Dorai-Raj (5.17-22, Jesus College) – who shared their experiences and insights as current Engineering undergraduates.

Blessed with glorious sunshine, the group explored three of the university’s renowned colleges – Peterhouse, Pembroke, and Robinson – gaining a real sense of Cambridge’s academic environment and architectural beauty. Highlights of the day included punting along the Backs, offering postcard-perfect views of King’s College Chapel, and a walk along the historic King’s Parade, passing the Senate House and Great St Mary’s Church.

The pupils were given a unique perspective on student life and the Cambridge application process thanks to the generous support of several Old Malvernians. Ginny and Emilio shared valuable advice on preparing a strong application and approaching the challenging interview process with confidence. Professor Jeremy Thurlow, a Fellow at Robinson College, also contributed to the day’s discussions, offering academic insights and encouragement.

The group visited both the university’s historic engineering laboratories and the newly developed Cambridge West science centre, illustrating the exciting blend of tradition and innovation that defines the university today.

The visit not only demystified the Cambridge experience but also inspired the pupils to aim high as they consider their futures in STEM subjects.

Our thanks go to Ginny and Emilio for being such brilliant guides and source of support to our pupils.
