The OM Gryphons kicked off their 2025 cricket season in fine style with a confident win against the Sussex Martlets CC (Over 40s) on The Senior on Sunday 4th May. Under the captaincy of Jonny Edwards (2.17–22), the team were eager to make a strong start – and they did not disappoint.
Despite the unseasonably cool conditions, spirits were high as players and spectators gathered for what turned out to be a thrilling encounter. With a young and energetic side, the Gryphons looked poised to challenge their experienced opponents from the outset.
The Martlets won the toss and chose to field first. Opening for the Gryphons were Ollie Tulloch (7.17–22) and Myles Holland (SH.17–22), who both showed excellent composure and skill at the crease. Their commanding performances saw each reach a half-century before retiring not out, setting a solid foundation for the innings.
Building on that momentum, Anthony Arnold (SH.92–97) and Toby Newman (2.19–24) added valuable runs, each contributing 30 to the total. Just as the Gryphons looked to push on, the Martlets found a breakthrough in the form of Ian Jones, who turned the tide momentarily with a superb hat-trick. Nevertheless, the Gryphons posted a competitive 205 for 6 off 34.4 overs.
In reply, the Martlets’ opening batsmen found themselves under early pressure, with a quick breakthrough from Jonny Edwards, followed by another wicket from Guy Sharp (9.19–24). However, the Martlets’ Dan Jackson and Arran Arris put together a solid partnership, scoring 33 and 44 runs respectively.
The turning point came courtesy of tight bowling from Justin Major (8.86–91) and Guy Sharp, who between them managed to stifle the Martlets’ momentum. Major, clearly still inspiring former pupils from the side lines, was cheered on with enthusiastic cries of “Come on, Sir!” – his name, it seems, remains off-limits in favour of tradition.
The Martlets were eventually bowled out for 185 in 33.5 overs, giving the Gryphons a well-earned and encouraging victory to start the season.
A heartfelt thank you to all those who came to support the match – we hope to welcome the Martlets back again in the near future.
