Green Giving Day Success

Green Giving Day Success

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in our first Green Giving Day on 20th – 21st June. The day was a brilliant success which saw pupils, staff, parents, alumni and friends coming together online to kickstart the College’s new Green Fund to drive sustainability initiatives and realise our ambition to make Malvern College carbon neutral by 2050.

There was a fantastic atmosphere on campus, with highlights including a ‘Wheelie Green Challenge’ with over 200 pupils and staff taking part in a kilocalorie cycling challenge to determine how many hours they would be able to ‘keep the lights’ on for in the Main Building. An impressive 59,779 Kcals were clocked in the 8 hours of the challenge, which equates to keeping the lights on for 3 hours and 40 minutes. Congratulations to the winning houses No.9 and No.3 who have been awarded the new Green Challenge Cup.

Elsewhere, pupils and staff wore green clothes in support of the day, made their own green smoothies with our Catering Team’s smoothie bike, decorated windows with a sustainability theme, and there was a Green Bake Sale. Mrs Angus promised to dye her hair green if the Bake Sale raised more than £200 – which it did (see photo!).

Our Green Giving Day finale was a screening of the award-winning documentary, Fashion Reimagined in The Rogers Theatre and showed one woman’s mission to create a sustainable collection from field to finished garment and transform the way we engage with fashion.

Other sustainability-themed activities during this week included Talal Hasan (2.95-00) speaking (from Oman) to the pupils in Chapel, describing the carbon capture project that won him a £1m Earthshot Prize this year. Our Lower Sixth IB pupils presented their Group 4 projects on a sustainability theme; after spending two days researching their projects, these teams of biologists, chemists and physicists delivered 10-minute presentations including ‘Powering Vehicles in the Future’ and ‘Sustainability and Energy Production’.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part. Over the 36 hours, more than 330 generous donors raised an incredible £133,855, with donations still coming in! Thank you again for your support which will protect our heritage buildings, beautiful setting and enriching learning environment for future generations.
