Types of Legacies

In the UK, legacy gifts to the Malvernian Society are exempt from Inheritance Tax. The value of a legacy gift is deducted from the total value of your estate before Inheritence Tax (IHT) is calculated.

If you are not married or in a civil partnership, IHT is due on an estate worth more than £325,000 at 40% above this threshold. However, this rate may be reduced to 36% if 10% or more of the estate is left to charity. Married couples and civil partners are allowed to pass their possessions and assets to each other tax-free.

Inheritance Tax is a complex issue, and we strongly advise you seek professional advice on the tax implications of leaving all or part of your estate to the Malvernian Society. The Inheritance Tax threshold and rate of tax payable is reviewed regularly by the government. It is therefore advisable to review your will from time to time to ensure that any provisions intended to minimise tax remain appropriate.

There are a number of types of legacy you can leave to the Malvernian Society, for example:

Residuary Legacy

This form of legacy is associated with your estate and allows you to leave all of your estate, or what is remaining after other expenses and bequests have been met, to the Malvernian Society. Alternatively, you can leave a specific percentage of your estate to the Society. Even leaving just 1% of your estate could make a significant difference to the Malvernian Society. A residuary legacy is generally of the greatest benefit as its value increases in the line of inflation.

Pecuniary Legacy

This form of legacy allows you to leave a specified sum of money to the Malvernian Society. Please be aware that over time the value of this bequest may decrease with inflation, but it is possible to index-link the sum to preserve its current value.

Specific Legacy

This allows you to leave specific assets such as property, valuables, stocks or works of art to the Malvernian Society.
