Alumni rally for a cause: marathon raises over £11,000 in memory of Josh Baker

Congratulations to Josh Dickenson (9.16-21), Luke Tulacz (5.15-20), and Billy Tulloch (7.16-21), who undertook a remarkable challenge before Christmas: a 26.2-mile fundraising marathon in memory of their friend and fellow Old Malvernian, Josh Baker (SH.16-21). Josh tragically passed away in May 2024, and this heartfelt effort was a tribute to his enduring legacy.

The marathon began on Saturday, 21st December, at Astwood Bank Cricket Club, Josh’s boyhood club. A crowd of around 75 well-wishers gathered to cheer the trio as they set off. The support didn’t stop there. Along the way, encouragement came from friends, family, and even professional cricketers, providing the runners with morale boosts at key moments.

Josh Dickenson shared highlights from the journey: “At Worcester Woods, Worcestershire CCC’s head coach Alan Richardson and his son joined us for a few miles, giving us a real lift as we approached the halfway mark. Later, at New Road, Pat Brown, Adam Finch [both professional cricketers], and Tommy Sears [ex-Worcestershire physio] joined us for the final 10 miles.”

The most gruelling stretch came as they reached Powick, at the 20-mile mark. “That’s when everyone wished they’d done a few more training runs,” Josh admitted. “The Malvern Hills were a serious challenge, but fuelled by jelly babies, we made it to Malvern College. Arriving there to a standing ovation was an incredible moment and gave us the boost we needed to finish.”

The trio completed the marathon in 5 hours and 10 minutes, including stops for photos and well-earned breaks. Their journey ended at Barnards Green Cricket Club, Josh Baker’s home club, where they were greeted by a standing ovation from nearly 200 supporters. “It was overwhelming,” Josh reflected. “We felt relief, exhaustion, happiness, and – above all – a deep connection to Josh and his memory.”

This inspiring feat has already raised over £11,000 for The Baker Foundation, a charity established by Josh’s parents to honour his passion for cricket. The foundation supports all facets of the game, from players and ground staff to first aid teams, ensuring Josh’s love for cricket continues to inspire others.
