The annual Old Malvernian Rifle Club Shoot took place at Malvern College on Saturday 8th November. This is a keenly contested event that brought together the Old Malvernians with teams from the College’s CCF and the Rifle Club, to compete for the prestigious Rifle Challenge Cup.
This year introduced two exciting firsts: all competitors used identical rifles, creating a level playing field and a true test of skill and adaptability; and each shooter was allowed five spotting shots to confirm their scope zero before firing their ten-bull competition card.
The day concluded with the fast-paced ‘Bingo’ challenge — a thrilling finale where shooters had just ten seconds to identify and hit a randomly called target circle, demanding both precision and quick thinking.
When the final shots were fired, the competition proved to be one of the closest in memory. The CCF posted a strong 558/600 on the ten-bull card and 140/150 in the Bingo round, securing third place. The OMs and Rifle Club tied on 571/600, leaving the Bingo scores to decide the winner. In a tense finish, the OMs scored 135/150, just ten points behind the Rifle Club, who claimed victory with 145/150 — and with it, the Rifle Challenge Cup.
It was a fantastic afternoon of shooting, enjoyed by all, and a rematch is already scheduled for March. A huge thank you to everyone who took part. If you’d like to get involved, the OM Rifle Club would be delighted to hear from any interested OMs!
