A glorious return

A glorious return

Last Sunday (29th June), The Senior at Malvern College played host not only to a thrilling Cricketer Cup fixture but also to a very special guest – 93-year-old Old Malvernian, Tim Herold (SH.45-48). Accompanied by his son, Alastair, Tim made the journey back to his alma mater to cheer on the OM Cricket Club in a match that proved as gripping as it was nostalgic.

Tim, who represented the 1st XI in 1948, was warmly welcomed by a wide circle of fellow OMs and supporters. His presence brought a tangible sense of history to the day, as he shared stories from his time at Malvern and reflected on how the school – and the game – have evolved over the decades.

One of the highlights of Tim’s visit was meeting the current Headmaster. With a twinkle in his eye, Tim remarked that during his school days, the only time you saw the Headmaster was on your birthday – or if you were in serious trouble! It was a moment that bridged generations and brought smiles all around.

Tim spent time in the Pavilion, poring over the team boards and spotting familiar names from his playing days. Though he had hoped to explore more of the school grounds, the cricket proved far too nail-biting to leave his front-row bench seat; he was delighted to be part of the action once again.

As the sun dipped behind the hills, Tim left with a heart full of memories and a firm plan to return next year for the Cricketer Cup. His enduring passion for the game and for Malvern is an inspiration to all, and his visit was a poignant reminder of the lifelong bond shared by Old Malvernians.

See you next year, Tim!
